“I know that spring is in the air, I’ll wake my friends and wish them cheer, with glorious news that spring is here”. It was time to collect the kit from the cellar and head to Hasenbergl in the north of Munich for a friendly against the Pak Orient. It was a beautiful sunny day, around 19°C and although there were cloudbursts in the west we were able to get in full 30 over game with no interruptions. Ah the joyful anticipation of hearing leather on willow or Lovell attempting to influence the umpire by exclaiming “bowled” every time we bowled a wide. He was pretty hoarse at the end of the match as we bowled 50 of them in 25 overs. MCC batted first and scored 144 for 8 from 30 overs, senior player Giles top scoring with 27, including a couple of uncharacteristic slogs to disturb the animals down in cow corner. Judith Durham was spotted in the bushes down the far end but she didn’t come over to chat at all, presumable being still embarrassed by her table dance during out recent visit to the Forschungsbrauerei. Pak Orient made 144 for 10 in 25 overs in reply – it was a bat 12, field 11 fixture – however our extras were the highest single score in the game and our fifty wides equalled the 50 not out for Pak Orient by Mateen. The English captain is always asked what positives he can take out of the most recent hammering so what can MCC take out of this? Giles passed his 2000 runs aggregate for the club and, although still fifth in the all-time run scorers table has a real chance to move up a couple of places. Jack Hobbs, sometimes erroneously referred to as Charles, made his highest score for the club to date and Bunty Blades had a 4-for. This takes him to joint equal second with Chris Langfelder in the all-time wicket takers list and Tony Jacobs will be having sleepless nights as the gap between first and second narrows…..

from the Chairman..Sunday 19th was another beautiful spring day, well worth casting a few clouts although May has not even begun. What was scheduled to be a bat 13, field 11 fixture degenerated by the agreed start time to a standard 11 a side match of 35 overs. Arnab bailed at 3 in the morning by email and the general feeling was, we wish him luck and hope she was pretty. Jono Wright turned up to watch in very fetching colourful shorts – shades of the chairman’s camouflage kit here – and was roped in to play as two others had bailed by then. Pak Orient won the toss and decided to bat. Captain Palfrey – he’s a Tasmanian – gave a stirring pre-match pep talk underlining the need to bowl fewer wides than the previous week. I know he gave the talk for I was there substituting for Gus who was still suffering from several rounds Caiperinhos and didn’t arrive until eight overs had been played. Still the talk had some effect for this week the wides total was halved to 25 and this in five more overs. Garner took a four-for and, in general, everyone bowled well considering there have been no nets and it was only the second match of the season. We had one new player, Jan Fiedler, a slow bowler who learned his trade a school in Ireland. He neither bowled nor batted but fielded well and, as happens when you are new, the ball followed him everywhere. Didgeridoo Wilmington appeared again after 13 years and claimed a promotion in the batting order due to having played “I dreamed a dream” over 5000 times in his professional career. The captain duly put him in his place. MCC began well when we batted with Palfrey-man and Majid putting a good opening partnership together and later Palfrey and Gus had an even more aggressive partnership. In the end we lost by one run, Pak Orient scoring 232 for 10 in 34.5 overs and MCC scoring 231 for 7 in 35 overs with Blades and Palfrey both enjoying vastly differing fifties.

Fresh from the tour to Ljubljana a working party of eight turned up early to repair the Flicx pitch before our first home game of the season against Serendib, or rather a team consisting of players from Serendib, Pak Orient, CCB and the MICs. Weston duly won the toss and chose to bat with himself and Palfrey putting on a splendid opening partnership of 123 before Palfrey fell for 38 in the 25th over. DiPerna playing his first match of the season chose to follow him one ball later and had great fun afterwards talking us through his innings ball-by-ball and describing the simply unplayable one. Weston finally went for 98 being caught on the boundary in the 37th over. Unfortunately, after Palfrey and Weston everything went pear-shaped and the score changed from 123 for 0 in 24 overs to 167 for 7 in 38 overs, only partly due to some really good bowling by Ravi who took 4 for 12 in 6 overs. That was too much for the Munich weather and the heavens opened for about 45 minutes so the game was reduced to 38 overs. Wickets fell pretty regularly but Serendib were always up with the run rate and needed only 6 runs off the final over to win. Fortunately Scott bowled a straight one and the batsman panicked and tried to hit him out of the ground finishing up bowled, middle stump, to complete a superb match. The wickets were spread around MCC`s bowlers with Garner taking his second four-for of the season making him the leading wicket taker so far. His first three wickets were a hat trick – stumped off a leg-side wide, bowled and caught at mid-on. For the post match celebrations, Bunty had done a little gardening and was the life and soul of the party at the Chinese Tower.

A record 5th wicket partnership by Lovell (70) and Di Perna (61) of 124 set MCC up for a big score away at CCB. Short boundaries, a brisk outfield and it was help yourself at the buffet bar. Weston filled his boots late on with a faced 40 not out. Mcc racking up 259 in their 35 overs. In reply the home side were never in it. Pick of the bowlers were Finchy with 3-12 and debutant Lewis with 3-22 both with left arm darts from the top end. The only end. The end.

With many members in Vienna for the annual mini-world-cup it proved to be an onerous task – in fact impossible – to get a full team out for the first friendly against the newly formed Punjab CC. However, Andy Mayston from Reading who has lived in Germany for 11 years but has never ever played cricket in his life turned out and we were able to get two players from Punjab to play for us as well as a welcome return from the incapacitated Alan Bail and our no3, Sobek – how we have missed his sitting outside the changing room dressed only in his jock strap. These two put on a good middle order partnership, filled with 9 iron heaves. The Punjabis were all young and athletic but chose to field after winning the toss. An excellent opening partnership of 60 between Palfrey and Scott followed by 20 for the second wicket between Scott and Rabbani seemed to suggest that a high MCC score was on the cards. After Rabbani fell for 11, the following scores were 3, 0, 0, 0, 3, 0, 10* and 1, three of the ducks being golden ones – bad shot selection there Geoffrey! Alan Bail and “falls-into-buses” Mayger, broke the ducks with three each and Blades played a magnificent rearguard in terms of the total score being 10 not out and featuring in 9th and 10th wicket stands of 10 and 14 respectively. The MCC score needs qualifying in that Gale was hampered by not wearing his Jock outside his trousers and Sobek went for a golden duck claiming he was too frightened of hitting the ball far and possibly injuring Gale’s six month old son Benjy on the cow boundary. Thanks to 33 extras MCC managed 116 – 10 after 26.3 overs. Our bowlers got off to the best possible start with “falls into buses” taking a wicket off his first ball, held at slip by Antarctic Scotty. Gale made an impressive return to bowling and was the only MCC bowler not to give any wides. Generally though Punjab was always up on the required run rate but lost wickets regularly so we were always in with a chance. After 19 overs they were 114 for 9 and with MCC bowling a total of 26 wides it was fitting that the final balls were 1, wide, wide, giving Punjab CC a one wicket victory after 20.1 overs. In fact we could have had them all out in the 19th over when Miller took a magnificent catch but put his foot over the boundary making nothing into a six. It had been a beautiful afternoon, 25 ° plus, lots of sunshine, and, considering the Friday training was cancelled because of flooding, we were extremely lucky to have got the game in at all. Also having only played some 45 overs total the game was finished before 4 pm so we were able to sit around and enjoy Helmut’s Augustiner before heading off for several Mass at the Chinese tower. There is no truth in the rumour that Blades, Bradley and Maygar were incapable and climbed in to the wrong bus to get to the Ostbahnhof.

Mcc knocked up an imposing total with every batsman filling their faces at the buffet bar. Help yourself. In reply the tourists looked to have enjoyed a surfeit of Munich hospitality and were bowled out cheaply with Bunty Blades the pick of the bowlers.

Comments on the Match
In game 23 of the 2009 WSC friendly challenge Pak Orient won the toss and chose to bat. A 30 over match on a beautiful summer’s day in Johasenbergl – 28° and a blue/white Bavarian sky. MCC had had some difficulty getting a full team out to the extent that even the chairman brought his kit to the game. Fortunately an effervescent Aussie from Innsbruck, complete with Crocodile Dundee hat, and Ken Weston, father of club captain and Trentino late night flasher Daniel saved us from this embarrassment. Pak Orient lost wickets regularly with the first and second wicket partnerships of 32 and 45 respectively being the best they could do and were all out for 138 in 24 overs. Metcalfe taking a four-for with Blades and Crocodile Stevenson each taking three. Blades second wicket took him to 200 wickets aggregate for the club and he is now only a few behind leading wicket taker Tony Jacobs. In reply MCC got off to a brisk start with Furlonger being particularly aggressive before being bowled for 17 when the score was 26. Thereafter there was nothing much to write home about apart from a 53 run fourth wicket partnership between Didgeroo Dean and Crocodile again, Croc being the highest scorer with 26 and MCC finished with 134 all out in 29.2 overs.
